My local community garden unearthed a large bucketfull of shells while excavating in order to access the municipal water supply. They were punctured with a series of perfectly round holes–remnants of the mother-of-pearl button industry. A trip to the local history archives and some online research revealed the sobering and awe-inspiring context that surrounds the shells and their former inhabitants. which informs the booklet text.
