Hi Vis for Lo Vis

Performance, 2009 & 2014

The first iteration of this project was titled One Week of Safety–a week-long performance during which I exclusively wore safety orange (at home, at school, at work, on a date, at the market…everywhere).  At the time the gesture didn’t hold a lot of meaning for me. Years later, after an injury that left me with a vision impairment, high visibility (aka “hi vis”) clothing took on new meaning (and practicality) for me.  Wearing safety orange as I went about my day felt like a meaningful response to the experience of being both utterly invisible and extremely conspicuous that came with my disability.  It also served a very practical purpose: making sure that others could see me when I couldn’t necessarily see them.
