I’m so excited to release this project into the world!<\/p>\n

A distinct aggregation \/ A dynamic equivalent \/ A generous\u00a0<\/em>ethic of invention<\/i>: \u00a0Six writers respond to six sculptures\u00a0<\/em>was commissioned by the Walter Phillips Gallery at the Banff Centre. \u00a0Inspired by uninspired approaches to accessibility, it treats\u00a0traditional audio description as\u00a0a space for creative acts.<\/p>\n

Writers Anna Bowen<\/a>, Angela Marie Schenstead, Crystal Mowry, Laura Burke, Catherine Frazee and Nicole Kelly Westman<\/a> each crafted thoughtful, generous responses to a public artwork on the Banff Centre campus. \u00a0Together these thoughts and words\u00a0compose an audio piece that is available to stream from the Walter Phillips Gallery website<\/a> and can also be heard on MP3 players that can be borrowed from the gallery’s front desk.<\/p>\n

The work also exists in a visual format. \u00a0Artist Shannon Finnegan<\/a> and I collaborated to create a broadsheet of transcriptions (pictured above). \u00a0The broadsheet includes six text drawings from the ongoing collaborative series\u00a0A seat at the table, a slice of the pie<\/em>, that grew from conversations\u00a0about the practice of visual description.<\/p>\n

This project continues to work on me, opening up questions and possibilities for visual description that may challenge sensory hierarchies, is rooted in pleasure, is individualized and particular, that talks back to a work, that memorializes what is no longer physically present,\u00a0and that acknowledges the subjective.<\/p>\n

I’m so grateful to the writers and artists who contributed to this project and all those who worked behind the scenes: \u00a0Jacqueline Bell, Caitlin Sutherland, Victoria Lessard, Ed Renzi, Nicol\u00e1s Ar\u00e9valo and Iga Gerolin. \u00a0Gratitude also to the Canada Council for the Arts.<\/p>\n

The exhibition runs until September 27, 2020.<\/p>\n
